Subscribe today and the first week is on us. Activate your 7-day free trial now and you’ll get this issue (#0) and next Thursday’s (#1) before deciding. If you stay, it’s €5 a month — a coffee a week, not a spritz. If you don’t, you’ve still walked out with two menus and a few good lines to use at the bar.

Now — to the counter.

Imagine it’s Thursday evening. You walk into a bar in Trastevere, or Brera, or some piazza in a town you can’t pronounce. You order. You stay. And around you, the talking starts.

Two hours between work and dinner. Someone is shouting about the manager who shouldn’t have changed the midfield. Someone else is defending a singer everyone else is mocking. The guy at the counter has just delivered a verdict on the government that the woman next to him is already dismantling. Nobody is right. Nobody really wants to be. The point is the conversation.

This is the Italy you came for. The one you can’t read in the news, can’t book on a tour, can’t quite catch even when you’re standing in the middle of it — because the references fly past you. Hai visto? Ma dai. Ma figurati. You laugh half a beat late. You nod at the wrong moment. You feel the door close right when it was about to open.

AL BAR is the key to that door.

Every Thursday at 6 PM Italian time, we pull up a stool next to you and walk you through what’s actually being argued about in Italian bars this week. Not the polished news. The loud version. The one with opinions, grudges, in-jokes, and verdicts.

We serve it like a real aperitivo — one round at a time, two hours of talking, the conversation getting louder as the night goes on:

  • 0. Una Coca Zero — three or four bite-sized stories with a punchline. You just sat down. You’re still sober. You’re warming up.
