Within weeks the nodule was gone. He always said the cause was in his head. The fear had made the swelling. The sound came back once he stopped chasing it.

Odd story for a man with that much sound in him. His father had it too, the voice and the fear both, and never got past either.

The baker who wouldn’t sing

Fernando Pavarotti baked bread on the edge of Modena and had a fine tenor. He never sang for money. Nerves stopped him, the ordinary kind that shuts the throat when strangers are watching. So he sang at home, in the church choir and in the Corale Rossini, the town’s male chorus, and he filled the flat with records: Gigli, Martinelli, Schipa, Caruso.

The flat had two rooms and four people in it. Adele Venturi, Luciano’s mother, worked in the cigar factory. The fumes meant she could not nurse, so the baby went out to a balia, the woman already feeding a girl born seven months earlier to another mother off the factory floor. That girl was Mirella Freni. They were still singing together half a century later, and Freni liked to point out which of them had got more of the milk.

In 1943 the war pushed the family into the countryside. They rented one room from a farmer, and Luciano found he liked farm work. He also wanted to be a goalkeeper. His mother wanted a diploma magistrale and got it. He taught in a primary school for two years before telling his father he was going to sing instead. Fernando, who knew the odds better than anyone in the building, agreed without enthusiasm.

In 1955 the Corale Rossini went to Llangollen in Wales for an international choral competition and won it. Father and son were both in the chorus. Luciano called it the most important experience of his life.

Seven years, no money

Arrigo Pola, a working tenor in Modena, taught him for nothing because the family had nothing. When Pola left for Japan he moved on to Ettore Campogalliani in Mantua, riding over with Freni. He sold insurance to eat.

The debut came in April 1961 at the Teatro Municipale in Reggio Emilia: Rodolfo in La bohème, the prize for winning a competition, half an hour down the Via Emilia from his mother’s factory. Two years later Covent Garden needed a Rodolfo at short notice because Giuseppe Di Stefano was ill. Di Stefano was the singer whose records he had worn out as a boy. He took the job.

The break that mattered was Australian. Joan Sutherland and her husband Richard Bonynge wanted a tall tenor for a 1965 tour, and over two months he sang 40 performances beside her. He came back with a technique. For the rest of his life he said Sutherland had taught him where the breath sits. He would press a hand on a young singer’s diaphragm to show them, the way she had done to him.

What the voice actually did is harder to put on a poster than the high Cs. It was not a big sound. He stayed in lyric roles most of his life and left the heavy Verdi to other people, and he acted with his face and not much else. What he had was a forward, sunlit ring at the top that carried over an orchestra without ever sounding pushed, and a legato Sutherland had taught him to spin out across a long line. And the diction. Italians who could not read a note followed every syllable he sang, which is rarer among tenors than it sounds, and it is most of the reason his own country loved him before the rest of the world had heard of him. Inside that narrow band, for about 20 years, he made the most beautiful noise in the business.

After that the rooms get bigger. La Scala, with Karajan conducting and Freni singing Mimì. Covent Garden in 1966, where he became the first tenor to hit nine natural high Cs in a row in “Ah! mes amis”. Then 17 February 1972 at the Metropolitan, that aria again, and 17 curtain calls.

The nail and the handkerchief

He never lost the fear. Vado a morire, he would say on the way to the wings, and he meant it the way people mean things they’ve said a thousand times.

So he built rituals around it. He would not go on without a bent nail in his pocket, iron being the Italian version of touching wood. The habit was well enough known that stagehands at the Met kept a stock of them and dropped them where he would find them on the walk from his dressing room. Then the handkerchief. Herbert Breslin, his American manager, said it began with a cold at a recital in Missouri in 1973. Pavarotti said he just didn’t know what to do with his hands. Breslin was by then writing about a man who had stopped speaking to him, so take Missouri for what it’s worth. The white square went everywhere he went for the next 30 years.

The king of cancellations

He was also difficult to work with.

In 1989 Ardis Krainik of the Lyric Opera of Chicago ended a 15-year relationship and banned him from the house for life. Her arithmetic was hard to argue with: in eight years he had cancelled 26 of 41 booked appearances, the last a season premiere dropped a fortnight before rehearsals. Some of those 26 nights he was frightened. Some of them he simply didn’t feel like it. The singers who covered for him were inconvenienced either way.

Then 7 December 1992. Opening night at La Scala on Sant’Ambrogio, Muti in the pit and the President of the Republic in the house. Zeffirelli’s Don Carlo, and Pavarotti back in Milan after five years. In the second act his voice cracked on a high B. When he came out to bow, the loggione — the gallery, where the people who know the repertoire sit — booed him. He said afterwards that it is normal to be booed if you miss a note, which was gracious and, in Milan, correct.

The heavier charge among musicians was that he had stopped working. Richard Bonynge, who conducted him for decades, said plainly that he never learned to read music. He took roles in by ear, from coaches at the piano. Other singers have worked that way, but it limits how much new music a man can take on late, and his repertoire narrowed as his fee went up. Breslin, who had built the career, published a book in 2004 that was hard on the acting and on how slowly the parts went in. Pavarotti answered on the BBC in 2005. He could read music, he told Jeremy Paxman. What he could not read was an orchestral score.

The verdict at home was worse than anything printed abroad. Paolo Isotta, the most feared critic in Italy, used his Corriere della Sera column the morning after the death to say he would rather remember the young tenor from Emilia, before the years buried him under detriti limacciosi. Silty debris. The boy who sang Donizetti and Bellini so cleanly you caught every syllable. Everything after that, for Isotta, was waste.

Money was the last of it. He had declared Monte Carlo as his residence for years. In 1999 an Italian court decided the flat couldn’t plausibly hold his family, and the Guardia di Finanza came for him. He settled in 2000 for more than 24 billion lire in back taxes and penalties, and in 2001 a court in Modena cleared him of the criminal charge of filing false returns.

The horse show

By the mid-eighties the singing was one product among several. There had been a film. MGM put up eighteen million dollars in 1982 for Yes, Giorgio, in which Pavarotti played an Italian tenor. It won three Razzies and played to empty cinemas. There was a voice competition with his name on it and a horse show in Modena, the licensing deals, and later a perfume.

The engine was Tibor Rudas, a Hungarian impresario who had survived Bergen-Belsen and come up through Las Vegas and Atlantic City booking Sinatra. He worked out that a tenor could be sold the same way. Rudas moved him out of theatres and into arenas, with microphones and video walls and tickets priced in tiers. It worked, and it cost something. A bel canto voice is not built for singing outdoors into a microphone, and what came back into the opera house each season was thinner than what had left.

Norman Lebrecht, who has spent a career making this case, keeps the worst detail. Pavarotti broke off a run of Verdi’s Ballo in maschera at Covent Garden to launch the perfume, then cancelled performances pleading exhaustion. Around then the BBC dropped plans to televise a concert from his horse show, having discovered that he wasn’t going to sing at all, but mime to tape.

Caracalla

On the evening of 7 July 1990, on the eve of a World Cup final Italy had failed to reach, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti sang together in the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla, with Zubin Mehta conducting. The occasion was Carreras’s recovery from leukaemia and it was meant as a party among colleagues. The BBC had already taken “Nessun dorma” for its tournament coverage. By that summer a Puccini aria was being whistled by men who could not have named the opera. The record of that night is still the best-selling classical album ever made.

Then the party became a franchise. Rudas took the Three Tenors to Dodger Stadium for the 1994 final, the Champ de Mars in 1998, Yokohama in 2002, with arena tours in between. The Los Angeles stadium held 50,000 and another 1.3 billion watched from somewhere else. Domingo, announcing one of the world tours, said it would be hypocritical to pretend they weren’t in it for success, theirs and their sponsors’. The record companies went further. In 1997 they agreed among themselves to stop discounting and advertising the earlier albums while the new one was being launched, and the Federal Trade Commission took until 2003 to rule that the deal was an illegal restraint of trade.

The rest of the decade was outdoor crowds. There were 150,000 in Hyde Park in 1991 and more than 500,000 on the Great Lawn in Central Park two years later. Every summer at home he ran Pavarotti & Friends, standing in a field beside James Brown and the Spice Girls.

That field was not a vanity project. The concerts paid for UNHCR work in Kosovo, Pakistan, Zambia and Iraq; the 2001 edition alone raised more than two million dollars for Afghan children in camps across the Pakistani border. He put up the money for a music centre in Mostar so that Bosnian kids would have somewhere to play after the war, and Sarajevo made him an honorary citizen for it. The UN named him a Messenger of Peace in 1998 and gave him the Nansen Award for refugee work three years later.

Much of the opera world found it humiliating. The word was vulgarisation. Opera dragged out of the theatre, and a great Nemorino turned into a brand with a merchandising stall. The complaint was never really that he sang badly at Caracalla. It was that he sang for people who had not been trained to deserve it.

That assumes opera was ever theirs to guard. In Verdi’s Italy it was sung by bricklayers and printed on barrel-organ rolls. The hush and the evening dress came later, as an import. Putting a hundred thousand people in a park and making them cry at a Neapolitan song is the least experimental thing an Italian tenor can do. It is singing to the piazza, where the whole business started, and where his father sang.

I should say where I stand, because vulgarisation is not a neutral word. It is what gets said when an art that belonged to a few thousand people stops belonging to them, and it usually turns out that a good part of what was being defended was the scarcity. The compromise is real and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. An aria in a stadium is shorter and louder than an aria in a theatre. Something goes missing in the transfer, and the people who noticed were not imagining it. Every art that gets past its own congregation pays that toll. It is worth paying. A kid who caught “Nessun dorma” off a football broadcast in 1990 and went looking for the rest of Turandot did more for opera than a sold-out night at La Scala that would have sold out anyway.

He sold more than a hundred million records. He also kept singing after the voice had gone. The farewell tour ran on too long, and at his last appearance, the closing act of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Turin in 2006, he did not sing at all. Too ill to trust the notes in the February cold, he mimed to a recording made days earlier, with the IOC’s agreement. The stadium gave him the longest ovation of the night. It came out two years later, after he was dead.

Two wives and three wills

He met Adua Veroni in Modena in 1953, when she was 16 and he was a schoolboy with a voice. They married in September 1961, five months after Reggio Emilia. She taught school, earned more than he did through the insurance years, ran the house and the horses and in time the money, sat in on his lessons and told him what she thought. They had three daughters. In 1992 she published a book about the marriage.

There had been other women for years. One was the American soprano Madelyn Renée, whom he first heard in a masterclass and who became his assistant and, for most of the eighties, his lover. The end came in 1996, when a gossip magazine printed beach photographs of Pavarotti with his secretary, Nicoletta Mantovani, 26 years old and 34 years younger than him. He separated within weeks, after 35 years of marriage. The settlement cost him the family house in Modena and close to half of a very large fortune.

Mantovani had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at 23, the year she started working for him. They married at the Teatro Comunale in Modena in December 2003, less than a year after their daughter Alice was born. Her twin brother Riccardo was stillborn. Bono and Zucchero were in the room. Italy had been reading about all of it for seven years and was not entirely charmed. When the Duomo later agreed to a public viewing and a church funeral for a divorced man with a child born outside marriage, a parish priest in Modena told the Corriere it was a profanation of the temple.

He left three wills. One under Italian law, one under American law, and a handwritten one that cut his widow’s share. The estate was worth something like three hundred million euros against eighteen million in debts and mortgages. Within months his daughters were contesting the documents and a prosecutor in Pesaro was investigating whether their father had been of sound mind when he signed. They settled in July 2008. The daughters got the villa at Pesaro.

Modena, 8 September 2007

The cancer was found in July 2006. He died at home on 6 September the following year, at 71. They laid him out in the Duomo in a black tuxedo, with a rosary in his hands and the white handkerchief. Over two days the city counted 100,000 people through the doors.

No living tenor sang at the funeral. What came through the cathedral was a recording made in that same building in 1978: Panis Angelicus, sung by Luciano Pavarotti and by Fernando Pavarotti, baker, who had spent his life too frightened to stand up in front of strangers, and who did it that once, in his own church, next to his son.

Outside, the Frecce Tricolori went over trailing green, white and red. The coffin was driven ten kilometres out of town to Montale Rangone and buried near his parents.

Reggio

Gianni Versace was born on December 2, 1946, in Reggio Calabria, on the toe of the Italian boot, in a city that looks at Sicily across three kilometers of water. The Greeks settled that coast seven centuries before Christ. Their ruins were not behind museum glass; they were the ground itself. “I would look out the window of my house and see the ruins of the Roman baths,” he said once. As a boy he played football between the columns of a Greek temple.

His mother deserves more space than she usually gets. Francesca Olandese, called Franca, had been pulled out of school by her own father, who thought school was an improper place for a girl because there were men there, and who was, at the same time, a committed anarchist socialist, a man named Giovanni Battista Olandese, active in the workers’ movements of the South. Gianni carried his name. Franca trained as a seamstress under a woman everyone called “the Parisian,” a professional who had worked in France before the war, and she ended up running one of the most respected ateliers in southern Italy, in via Tommaso Gullì, a few steps from the cathedral. The women of Reggio’s upper class came to her to have Paris remade at Calabrian prices. The labels she sewed into the dresses read, in gold thread on black: Franca Versace, Reggio C.

Gianni grew up under the cutting table. He said many times that the shop was his university, and unlike most things designers say, this one appears to be simply true. He watched women describe their own bodies to his mother. He made his first dress at nine. In fifth grade a teacher caught him sketching gowns in class and called Franca to report that her son was, quote, a sex maniac; Franca answered that her son was not a maniac, he just loved fashion. There was also grief in the house, of the old Southern kind: an older sister, Tina, died at twelve from a badly treated tetanus infection.

One detail I can’t justify including except that I like it. When Donatella, the youngest, was eleven, Gianni convinced her to bleach her hair platinum blonde in honor of Patty Pravo, an Italian pop singer he adored. She has kept it that color for about sixty years now.

And there is the Medusa. In the mosaics of the ruins where the Versace children played, there was a head of the Gorgon, the monster whose gaze turned men to stone. When he was later asked why he had put a monster on everything he made, his answer had nothing to do with branding: Medusa makes whoever looks at her fall in love, with no way back, and he hoped his clothes would do the same. I should say that the sources contradict each other on when the face actually became the company logo. Some say it was there from the beginning; others insist that until 1993 the logo was just his name, and the Medusa came late, five years after the V&A in London had already exhibited him and four years before his death. I could not untangle this, so I will only say the face came from home.

Milan

He moved to Milan in 1972, at twenty-five. The apprenticeship years, designing for Genny, Callaghan, Complice and Mario Valentino, deserve more attention than I am going to give them; the short version is that on March 28, 1978 he showed the first collection under his own name at the Palazzo della Permanente, with his brother Santo, an economist, running the business, and Donatella soon at his side.

Two things from the Milan years matter more than the rest. In 1982 he presented the Oroton, a fine metal mesh, a material that until then belonged to armor makers, worked until it draped and moved like silk. And from 1981 he designed costumes for La Scala, starting with a Richard Strauss ballet (at the premiere he met Antonio D’Amico, who would be his partner for the rest of his life), then for the choreographer Maurice Béjart, with whom he became close, and for Bob Wilson’s Salome. The theater work is usually treated as a side note. He didn’t treat it that way; he published a whole book about it in 1987.

Italian fashion in those years organized itself around a rivalry between two men from the provinces, Giorgio Armani of Piacenza and Versace of Reggio. Armani removed things; Versace added them. Anna Wintour put the whole decade in one sentence, saying that Armani dresses the wife and Versace dresses the mistress. Years later an interviewer asked Donatella whether the line was fair, and she said she loved it, since mistresses have much more fun.

The Girls

Models had been famous before. Twiggy was famous. But nobody had ever paid them the way Versace decided to pay them: up to $30,000 each per show for Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington, figures his competitors considered proof of vanity or madness. He made the money back in press coverage, which he understood, earlier than anyone in Milan, to be the actual product.

The famous night came in 1991, at the finale of his autumn-winter show. The four women had just filmed the video for George Michael’s “Freedom! ‘90.” Versace played the song in the room, sat George Michael in the front row, and sent all four out together, arm in arm, mouthing the words. Crawford remembered coming out “skipping and holding hands,” feeling the stars had aligned. Fashion historians date the supermodel era from that night, and also the transformation of the runway show from a trade event for buyers into front-page material.

He also surrounded himself with famous people, the way a king keeps a court. Elton John was practically family and wore Versace everywhere, a walking billboard. Madonna, Prince, Tina Turner and Courtney Love wore him too. Princess Diana, after her separation from Prince Charles, used his bold clothes to show the world she was free. In 1997 he put the idea into a book, Rock and Royalty: rock stars photographed next to portraits of queens. At a time when high fashion still looked down on pop stars, he was crowning them.

America

Anyway, Miami. The house he bought in 1992 was, whether he said so or not, a rebuilt Reggio at another latitude: a palace on a seafront promenade, rooms covered in mosaics, and a morning ritual, every day, of walking down the waterfront to the News Café to buy the papers. An Italian provincial passeggiata, transplanted to Florida. His presence, and the parties, did a great deal to drive the rebirth of South Beach; the strip of retirement homes became an international destination within the decade. Tour guides now claim Casa Casuarina is the third most photographed house in the United States, after Graceland and the White House, a statistic I have no way to check and no ability to resist. A dressmaker’s son from Reggio Calabria, behind only the King and the President.

The American conquest ran through music. On July 1, 1996, he put Tupac Shakur on his Milan runway, the first rapper ever to walk for a major fashion house, at a time when luxury brands treated hip-hop with a mix of indifference and fear. The affection was returned with interest. Biggie put the brand into “Hypnotize.” De La Soul complained in a song about being sick of Versace glasses, which tells you how far it had spread. In 2013, three rappers from Atlanta released a single called simply “Versace,” which gave its name to an entire style of rap delivery, the “Versace flow.” Donatella appears in the video. No other Italian fashion house has had a second life inside American music, and it did not happen by accident; he had gone looking for that world when his colleagues wouldn’t touch it.

July 15, 1997

He was murdered on the front steps of the Miami house on the morning of July 15, 1997, coming back from the News Café. The killer was Andrew Cunanan, twenty-seven, already wanted for four murders; he shot himself on a houseboat eight days later. Versace was fifty. The funeral mass was held in the Duomo of Milan, in front of some two thousand mourners. The photograph everyone kept is from the front pew, Princess Diana with her hand on the arm of a weeping Elton John. Forty days later she was dead too.

After

Donatella took over the creative direction in the worst imaginable circumstances and held it for twenty-eight years, long enough to outlive every obituary written for the house. In 2018 the family sold to the American group Capri Holdings for about two billion dollars. In March 2025 Donatella stepped aside, and a designer named Dario Vitale, who came from Miu Miu and never met Gianni, took over the studio. On December 2, 2025, Prada completed its purchase of Versace for $1.375 billion. December 2 would have been Gianni’s seventy-ninth birthday, and Donatella marked it with one line: “Today is your day and the day Versace joins the Prada family.”

So the house built on one man’s way of seeing now belongs, for the second time in a decade, to people who never knew him. Prada’s announcement said Versace has significant untapped growth potential, which is how a balance sheet says beautiful. In Paris, a big retrospective opened in June at the Musée Maillol, the first in France since 1986, timed for what would have been his eightieth birthday; it has already been extended into the autumn; Reggio held one too, in the archaeology museum, his dresses next to the Greek fragments. Vitale has shown his first work for the house. What he will do with the Medusa is not clear yet, possibly not even to him.

Giovanni “Gio” Ponti was the true “director” of Italian modernity. If Giuseppe Verdi gave Italy its voice, Gio Ponti gave it its shape. He was an architect, a designer, an editor, and an artist who believed that beauty should not be a luxury for the few, but a part of everyday life. His work moved from the smallest details to the grandest scales, proving that a single mind could design the Lama door handle for Olivari with the same passion used to build a city landmark. He was a man who hated heaviness and darkness; he wanted the world to be light, colorful, and full of joy.

His career began in an unexpected place: a ceramic factory. In 1923, Ponti became the artistic director of Richard-Ginori. At the time, it was a traditional company, but Ponti transformed it into a global success by creating pieces like the Archaeological Walk vases and the Labyrinth collection. He took classic Italian themes and made them modern, winning the Grand Prix in Paris in 1925. This was his first great commercial success, and it showed his unique talent for combining art with industry. He understood that for Italian style to conquer the world, it needed to be both beautiful and well-made, a philosophy he later applied to the La Cornuta coffee machine for La Pavoni, which turned a daily ritual into an industrial sculpture.

In 1928, Ponti did something that changed the history of design: he founded the magazine Domus. Through its pages, he became a teacher for the entire world. He didn’t just show beautiful houses; he explained how to live in a modern way, often featuring his own projects like the Montecatini Building in Milan, which was one of the first examples of a fully modern office space in Italy. He used the magazine to promote talented young artists and to connect traditional craftsmen with large factories. By doing this, he created the ecosystem we now call “Made in Italy.” He was a master of communication, building a bridge between the workshop and the international market, making Italian taste a global brand.

Ponti’s philosophy was based on the idea of the “Italian-style house.” He believed a home should be a place of hospitality and light. He fought against thick walls and heavy furniture, creating instead the Distex armchair and the Round armchair, which seemed to float in the room. His designs were famous for their “lightness,” and his most iconic creation, the Superleggera chair (model 699), is the perfect example. Inspired by simple chairs used by fishermen, it was so light that it could be lifted with a single finger, yet so strong that Ponti famously threw it from a fourth-floor window to prove it wouldn’t break. This mix of elegance and engineering was his trademark, also seen in the Z-Series sanitary ware he designed for Ideal Standard, bringing high design into the most private parts of the home.

His greatest architectural achievement is undoubtedly the Pirelli Tower in Milan. While American skyscrapers of that time were often heavy, grey blocks, Ponti’s tower looked like a slim diamond made of glass and concrete. It seemed to have no weight at all. This building became the symbol of Italy’s economic miracle after World War II. But Ponti didn’t stop at the exterior; he designed everything inside, a concept of “total design” he also used for the Parco dei Principi Hotel in Sorrento, where he created thirty different patterns of blue and white ceramic tiles to reflect the colors of the sea. He believed every object in a room should “smile” at the person living there, a philosophy he even brought to the sea with the luxurious interiors of the Andrea Doria ocean liner.

Ponti was also a brilliant businessman and a global ambassador for Italy. He traveled the world, building the stunning Villa Planchart in Caracas—a house designed to be seen in motion—and the Villa Nemazee in Tehran. Wherever he went, he took a piece of the Mediterranean with him, eventually designing the Taranto Cathedral with its “perforated” white facade that looks like a giant lace screen against the sky. He collaborated with great artists like Piero Fornasetti to create interiors like those in the Palazzo del Bo in Padua. He proved that Italian style was not just about the past, but about a modern, sophisticated way of living that anyone, anywhere, could appreciate, even in his final international projects like the Denver Art Museum.

When Gio Ponti died in 1979, he left behind a world that looked much more beautiful because of his vision. Born in 1813 in the small village of Le Roncole di Busseto, Verdi was the son of a local innkeeper. His journey was difficult from the start. A famous story says he was rejected from the Milan Conservatory because his piano style was “different” and he was already “too old.” But his greatest challenge came later. Between 1838 and 1840, tragedy hit his life: Verdi lost his wife, Margherita, and their two young children to illness in just a few months. Heartbroken and facing the failure of his early work, he promised never to write music again. It was only by chance that he read the script for Nabucco. That story gave him the strength to return to music, starting a creative career that lasted for sixty years.

When Nabucco first played at La Scala in 1842, Italy was a divided land ruled by foreign powers. People were dreaming of becoming a single nation. When the chorus sang “Va, pensiero”—the song of the Hebrew slaves dreaming of their lost home—the audience didn’t just hear a religious story; they heard their own. That melody became an unofficial national anthem, a cry for freedom that united Italians from the North to the South. As the Risorgimento (the movement to unite Italy) grew stronger, Verdi’s name became a secret code. People wrote “Viva V.E.R.D.I.!” on city walls. To the foreign police, it looked like a tribute to a musician. To the Italians, it meant: Vittorio Emanuele Re D‘Italia (Victor Emmanuel, King of Italy). Verdi became the face of a new nation even before it officially existed.

Beyond politics, Verdi changed music forever. He broke away from the older, more formal styles of Rossini and Donizetti. He created what he called the “parola scenica” (the dramatic word), believing that every note and every word must tell a true story. He moved away from elegant styles to show real life. In his famous trilogy—Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, and La Traviata—he chose heroes that society usually ignored: a deformed jester, a vengeful woman, and a sick courtesan. By focusing on these characters, Verdi forced his audience to see the truth of human life, proving that great beauty can be found even in tragedy.

This artistic vision went hand in hand with great business skills. Verdi was perhaps the first modern “superstar” composer who understood the value of his fame. In a time when laws did not protect artists well, he worked hard with his publisher, Giulio Ricordi, to protect his music across Europe. He was a clever businessman who demanded high payments and respect from the most famous theaters. He became very wealthy through the popularity of his “hits.” He used his money to buy land at Sant’Agata, where he became a successful farmer, managing his fields with the same care he used for his music. This financial independence gave him the freedom to experiment and create late masterpieces like Aida, which was a global success.

Even as an old man, Verdi never stopped learning. His last works, Otello and Falstaff, written in his 70s and 80s, showed a modern style that influenced the future of music. However, his most generous “work” was the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti in Milan. This was a retirement home for poor musicians, built entirely with his own money. He called it his “most beautiful work” because he believed that a successful artist must help those in need. When Verdi died in 1901, over 300,000 people walked through the streets of Milan to say goodbye. They were not just burying a composer; they were honoring the man who gave Italy its voice.
