A line of very small cars comes down from the Mirafiori plant toward the centre of the city, models walking beside them for the photographers. Two cylinders. Thirteen horsepower. Just under three metres long. Three days earlier it had been shown in private to the prime minister; the night before, to the company&#8217;s directors at a gala. Now it is on the street, in a parade, the way you show off something you are not sure anyone will buy.</p><p>It goes on sale for less than half a million lire. Fiat has built a line that can turn out five hundred a day. Half the company thinks this is a mistake, too close to the 600 they launched two years before.</p><p>Look at the crowd on the pavement, though, not the cars. The men clapping are in their thirties and forties. Which means that a dozen years earlier most of them had been holding a rifle. And they had been pointing it at each other.</p><p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://italyuntold.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe wages real, a workman&#8217;s son able to buy a fridge and then, against all sense, a car &#8212; Italy reached for a word to describe it.</p><p>It did not say <em>growth</em>. It did not say <em>recovery</em>, the way the Germans said <em>Wirtschaftswunder</em> and meant, roughly, <em>look what we rebuilt</em>. It said <em>miracolo</em>. The economic miracle. And it used the word the way a Catholic country uses it: for something that happens to you, that you did not earn and cannot order to come back.</p><p>We have always assumed the miracle was the money. The money was the easy part. Machines, American orders, cheap oil at a few dollars a barrel: economists can account for all of it, and they have. What no economist can account for is who was standing at the machines.</p><h2>What everyone had been a dozen years before</h2><p>To see it you have to go back, not to 1957 but to a morning in September 1943.</p><p>On the 8th, Italy signed an armistice with the Allies it had been fighting, and broke in two. In the north stood the Repubblica Sociale Italiana, Mussolini&#8217;s last republic, propped up by the Germans. Against it, in the hills and the cellars and the factories, stood the Resistance. For twenty months Italians killed Italians, <em>partigiani</em> and <em>repubblichini</em>, enemy fronts inside the same towns and sometimes the same families. By the official count around 187,000 Italians died between that September and the end of the war, more than 120,000 of them civilians. Whole villages were burned in reprisal. The names are still on the memorials: Marzabotto, Sant&#8217;Anna di Stazzema. Mussolini ended hung by the feet in a Milan square while a crowd came to look.&#249;</p>

Every Wednesday, one fact, one face, or one date that made us who we are. Some of these stories are wounds. Others are triumphs. All of them are the things Italians of a certain age know without being told, and that the rest of the world has either never heard, or heard wrong. This is the memory underneath the country.</em></pre></div><div><hr></div><h3>The return</h3><p>He walks onto the set. The studio has been waiting four years. He is fifty-eight and looks ten years older. He sits at the desk where he sat every Friday between 1977 and 1983, smiles the smile of a man who has decided not to cry on television, and asks the question that will outlive him by a century.</p><p><em>Dunque, dove eravamo rimasti?</em></p><p>Well then. Where were we.</p><p>The audience applauds for almost a full minute. He waits. Then he says something Italians will quote less often, but which is the actual key to everything that follows. He says he is back, and he will stay back, <em>anche per parlare per conto di quelli che parlare non possono. E sono molti. E sono troppi.</em> Also to speak for those who cannot speak. There are many. There are too many.</p><p>That is the moment Enzo Tortora stopped being a television presenter and became something the Italian language did not yet have a word for. The word was invented after him, and it is his name.</p><p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://italyuntold.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe now&quot;,&quot;action&quot;:null,&quot;class&quot;:null}" data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton"><a class="button primary" href="https://italyuntold.substack.com/subscribe?"><span>Subscribe now</span></a></p><h3>The word</h3><p>The case is famous. The cultural fact is less so. Italians of a certain age remember the arrest, the manacles, the prison, the acquittal, the cancer, the death. What they often do not say out loud &#8212; because saying it sounds like a confession &#8212; is that Tortora&#8217;s real legacy is grammatical.</p><p><em>Metodo Tortora.</em> The Tortora method. You can drop the phrase today at a dinner table in Rome, a bar in Naples, a newsroom in Milan, and anyone over forty knows what you mean. A coordinated press campaign to destroy a reputation before any trial. A few real facts mixed with rumour. Leaks from people with reasons of their own. A verdict before any judge has spoken.</p><p>It is in the dictionaries now. A proper noun that escaped its original owner and became a unit of measurement for everything that came after.</p><p>To name something is to begin to defend yourself against it. Italy did not have that word before 1983. After 1983, it had it. The country gave it Enzo Tortora&#8217;s name, and Tortora paid for the privilege with his lungs.</p><h3>Before</h3><p>Genoa, November 30, 1928. He starts in RAI in the early fifties, the first generation of Italian television. <em>Campanile d&#8217;oro, Primo applauso, Canzonissima.</em> He presents Sanremo in 1959. Once in 1969, for an interview in which he calls RAI <em>un jet colossale guidato da boy scout, condannato a schiantarsi sulle rocce</em>: a colossal jet piloted by boy scouts, destined to crash on the rocks. He spends years in Switzerland, working for Italian-language Swiss TV, in exile from Italian Italian television.</p><p>He is also a journalist. A man of the liberal right at a time when most of his colleagues are on the left, and he does not pretend otherwise. In 1971, when 800 intellectuals sign an open letter accusing the police commissioner Luigi Calabresi of having murdered the anarchist Pinelli &#8212; a letter published next to an article by Camilla Cederna &#8212; Tortora is one of the very few journalists who defends Calabresi publicly. He becomes the commissioner&#8217;s friend. Calabresi is assassinated in 1972.</p><p>Remember this. The list of people who hated Enzo Tortora began long before anyone accused him of a crime.</p><p>In 1977 he creates <em>Portobello.</em> Twenty-two, sometimes twenty-eight million viewers every Friday night. A live flea market, a parrot, ordinary citizens selling absurd inventions to pay off small debts, money funnelled into cancer research and earthquake relief. Three and a half billion lire raised for cancer alone. Half of Italy watches <em>Portobello.</em> The other half pretends not to.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JxBc!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JxBc!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JxBc!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JxBc!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JxBc!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JxBc!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp" width="1280" height="720" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/fe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:720,&quot;width&quot;:1280,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:109928,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/webp&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://italyuntold.substack.com/i/199482312?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JxBc!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JxBc!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JxBc!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!JxBc!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe6bb58e-8358-4997-bae9-31c6365952ef_1280x720.webp 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>He is also disliked by people who matter.
